SARGA.CO – Among the great names in Japanese horse racing history, Mejiro Ramonu stands as a symbol of elegance, strategy, and triumph. She wasn’t merely a talented racehorse—she became the first mare ever to capture Japan’s coveted Triple Tiara, the ultimate crown for fillies, and remains an everlasting pride of the legendary Mejiro lineage.
Today, her story lives not only in the record books but also in the popular game and anime Uma Musume: Pretty Derby, introducing her glory to a new generation of racing and pop-culture fans.
Foaled on April 4, 1983, Mejiro Ramonu was born of distinguished bloodlines: her sire Mogami was known for toughness, while her dam Mejiro Hiryu carried the strong heritage of the prestigious Mejiro family.
With her elegant black-bay coat and sharp mind, Ramonu quickly drew attention. Entrusted to trainer Shinji Okuhira and paired with skilled jockey Hiroshi Kawachi, she developed a signature senkou (stalker) strategy—running just behind the leaders until the perfect moment to surge ahead.
Ramonu’s record sparkled: 9 wins in 12 starts. Her crowning glory came in 1986, when she swept Japan’s three premier Grade 1 races for fillies: the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas), the Japanese Oaks (Yushun Himba), and the Queen Elizabeth II Cup.
These victories made her the first mare to claim the Japanese Triple Tiara, a title reserved for those who combine speed, intelligence, and unwavering consistency. From that moment, she was forever hailed as Japan’s First Triple Tiara Queen.
Career’s End and Life After the Track
As with many legends, Ramonu’s brilliance dimmed after her peak. She failed to shine in the open-company Arima Kinen, and that decisive defeat marked the end of her racing career. She officially retired later in 1986.
Ramonu went on to broodmare duties, producing 12 foals—including Mejiro Desire—though none matched their mother’s remarkable achievements.
On September 22, 2005, Mejiro Ramonu passed away peacefully at age 22, leaving behind an enduring legacy.
For younger fans who never witnessed her on the track, Uma Musume: Pretty Derby brings Mejiro Ramonu back to life as a spirited “uma musume”—a fleet-footed anime girl who embodies the legendary mare’s determination and tactical flair. Through this digital revival, the story of Japan’s first Triple Tiara Queen continues to inspire, proving that true greatness transcends time.
