SARGA.CO – Have you heard of the racehorse Kamang Chrome? Mention the name and horse-racing fans across West Sumatra—especially in Bukittinggi—and throughout Indonesia will instantly recall a thrilling 2017 race.
On Sunday, July 30, 2017, the spotlight fell on the main event of the 51st National Horse Racing Championship (Kejurnas), Indonesia Derby Series I, held at the Tegal Waton Racetrack in Salatiga, Central Java.
Twelve horses lined up at the starting gate for the prestigious 3-Year-Old Indonesia Derby, vying for a total purse of IDR 200 million.
Wearing saddlecloth number 1, Kamang Chrome stood ready under jockey Tripan Eri and trainer Tuan Amris, facing the 2,000-meter track ahead.
Owned by Dr. Delfi, SpM, Dy. Mangkuta Basa, representing Emeral Stable, Kamang Chrome was the stable’s prized contender.
That day, the chestnut stallion displayed breathtaking strength and speed. Near the final stretch, he surged past the hometown favorite from Eclipse Stable, Xerxes Eclipse, stunning supporters and onlookers alike.
Just 200 meters away from the finish line, Kamang Chrome made a stunning come-from-behind performance to complete the 2000-meter race.
Passing his competitors one by one, this horse, which is a descendant of Snap Happy and Britannia, emerged as the champion after passing Xerxes Eclipse, ridden by J.Runtu, 50 meters before the finish line.
Cheers and thunderous applause erupted from dozens of supporters and hundreds of spectators at Tegal Waton.
Kamang Chrome proved his stamina and speed once again at the 2019 Indonesia Derby, competing in the Open Class.
There, he outpaced the celebrated Djohar Manik, the 2014 Triple Crown champion. Other Derby winners such as Dragon Runner and Red Silenos, racing in the same class, also had to concede to Kamang Chrome’s blazing performance.
Just like in 2017, the 2019 race was fiercely contested. After leading for much of the distance, Kamang Chrome faced a tight duel with Dragon Runner in the final few hundred meters.
Thanks to his power, speed, and the skill of his jockey, Kamang Chrome captured the title in the Open Class of the 53rd National Championship Series I.

This championship also proved that West Sumatran horses are serious contenders. Five horses from the province made the podium at the 53rd Kejurnas.
Among them: Ratu Kemilau, first place in the Class B 1,200-meter sprint (non-Kejurnas); Atalanta Queen, third in the 2-Year-Old Beginner C/D class; Marawa Sumbar, third in the Junior class; Mars, first in the Non-Finalist Derby 2,000-meter Division 2; and Kamang Chrome himself, first in the Open Class 2,200 meters.
This weekend—Sunday, September 28, 2025—the strength and speed of West Sumatran horses will again be on display at the Indonesia Horse Racing (IHR) Cup II 2025, held at the Kubu Gadang Racetrack. Horses such as Tuan Nagura, Milea Guti, and Emmera are ready to show their best.
Will one of these powerful West Sumatran horses follow in Kamang Chrome’s legendary footsteps? Find out live—on site or via streaming—when the IHR Cup II 2025 begins at 8:30 a.m. WIB.
