SARGA.CO – Still in Love: Though no longer in this world, the name lives on. Such is the story of the legendary filly who once shook the Japanese horse racing scene in the early 2000s. Today, even after her passing, her spirit is revived through her appearance as a character in the game and anime Uma Musume: Pretty Derby.
Still in Love was foaled on May 2, 2000, at Shimokobe Farm in Hokkaido, carrying a lineage of racing royalty. She was sired by Sunday Silence, one of the most influential stallions in Japanese racing history, and out of Bradamante, a strong and proven broodmare. Her distinctive chestnut coat added an elegant aura that made her instantly recognizable on the track.
Trained by Shoichi Matsumoto and ridden by her loyal jockey Hideaki Miyuki, Still in Love was known for her adaptability in any racing condition. She often employed the Sashi (Closer) or Oikomi (Deep Closer) strategy—coming from behind and unleashing a powerful late burst—a racing style later faithfully reflected in Uma Musume, complete with skills like Late Surger and End Closer.
Her crowning year was 2003, when she swept the Japanese Fillies’ Triple Tiara by winning:
This feat made her only the second filly in Japanese history to claim all three titles, following Mejiro Ramonu in 1986. With that, Still in Love was hailed as the Queen of Japanese Racing—a symbol of grace and strength.
Yet, her glory was short-lived. After her Triple Tiara triumph, she finished runner-up in the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup (GI) later in 2003, and never won again. Over the next two years, she suffered consecutive defeats, as though the fire within her had been extinguished.
In total, Still in Love recorded 16 starts: 5 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third, with total earnings of ¥437,778,000. She was also honored as the JRA Best 3-Year-Old Filly of 2003.
Her story ended far too early. Retired and just beginning her second life as a broodmare, tragedy struck. After giving birth to her first foal, Judah, in 2007, Still in Love died from intestinal volvulus—a rare condition in which the intestines twist after foaling. She was only seven years old.
Today, Still in Love lives on—not just in memory, but as a character immortalized in Uma Musume. She embodies the fighting spirit, resilience, and elegance that defined her life on the track. With a captivating character design and her signature racing style, Still in Love runs once more—this time in the hearts of fans, both those who once saw her race in reality and new generations meeting her in the digital world.
The story of Still in Love is one of triumph, loss, and timeless legacy. She was a legend who lived too briefly, yet long enough to leave an irreplaceable mark. And through Uma Musume, she continues to inspire: proving that even after death, the love and spirit of a true champion never truly fade.
