SARGA.CO — Ever heard of racehorses with names like Dhojar Manik, Manik Trisula, King Argentine, or Queen Thalassa and wondered where such names come from? Behind these often exotic or unusual names lies a mix of personal inspiration and official rules.
According to Danang Yulianto, Secretary of the Racing Commission at Indonesia’s national equestrian federation PP PORDASI, while there’s no rigid technical rulebook for naming racehorses, there are still key principles, especially when it comes to registration.
The most important rule: no two horses can share the same name in the national register. If your desired name has already been taken, you’ll need to come up with a variant.
“For example, if the name MARQUES is already registered, it can’t be reused as-is,” Danang explains. “But owners can modify it—add MARQUES II, MARQUES JR, or include the name of the stable, like MARQUES T.A. or MARQUES ECLIPSE.”
Another option is to append the horse’s origin or stable location, like MARQUES JATENG or MARQUES JATIM, referring to Central and East Java, respectively.
Interestingly, many horse owners choose names based on what they call personal insight, or even spiritual guidance.
“This is why horse names on the track often sound eccentric, unfamiliar, or cryptic to the untrained ear,” Danang explains.
“For many owners, naming a horse is a deeply personal experience. The name may reflect hopes, the horse’s personality, or simply be one they believe brings luck.”
A racehorse’s name isn’t just a label; it becomes the horse’s official identity in every competition, whether national or international. It’s the name that gets entered into race books, called out at the track, and remembered in history if the horse goes on to achieve greatness, like a Triple Crown.
In the world of horse racing, a name can carry stories, prayers, even a philosophy. So, if you come across a horse with a name that seems odd, poetic, or wildly unique, just remember: behind that name lies a dream—that the horse won’t just run, but run to win.
When all eyes were on the race favorites, Mine That Bird came in as the ultimate underdog.
