SARGA.CO – Have you ever watched a horse race and suddenly lost track of your favorite horse because another horse’s body blocked its saddlecloth number? This situation happens often, especially when the field is tightly packed around the turn or charging toward the finish. But don’t worry—there’s a simple trick that helps spectators stay focused without missing the crucial moments.
In Indonesian horse racing, jockey cap colors are far more than just accessories or visual flair. They serve an important function as official identifiers of saddlecloth numbers. This system is used consistently across Indonesia, allowing stewards, race judges, and experienced spectators to instantly recognize a horse’s position simply by the color of the jockey’s cap.
Horse racing judge Recky Tuwo explains that in crowded races, saddlecloth numbers are often hard to see. “When horses are bunched together, the saddlecloth is easily covered. But from the cap color, we can immediately tell which number it is,” he said.
Below is the official standard for jockey cap colors by saddlecloth number:
Saddlecloth 1: Red
Saddlecloth 2: Yellow
Saddlecloth 3: White
Saddlecloth 4: Blue
Saddlecloth 5: Black
Saddlecloth 6: Green
Saddlecloth 7: Brown
Saddlecloth 8: Black and White
Saddlecloth 9: Orange
Saddlecloth 10: Purple
Saddlecloth 11: Pink
Saddlecloth 12: Light Blue
For stewards and sharp-eyed spectators, memorizing these colors is key to reading the race as it unfolds. Even when the saddlecloth number is completely obscured, the cap color remains clearly visible from a distance.
“Saddlecloth number one means a red cap. We memorize it all the way up to number twelve,” Recky added.
So the next time you watch a horse race, try shifting your focus from the saddlecloth number to the jockey’s cap color. Not only will it make it easier to follow your favorite horse, but it will also take your viewing experience to the next level.
