From the Racetrack to the Workforce: The Role of Horse Racing in the Local Economy

SARGA.CO—Have you ever envisioned the blend of luxury and adrenaline that comes to mind when horse racing is mentioned? As we know, this sport is often associated with exclusivity, dazzling spectacles, and intense competition; this sport carries a reputation that extends far beyond the racetrack.

Beneath the surface of its glamour and excitement, it brings a powerful engine of economic potential, particularly for the surrounding local communities. This article delves deeper into the role horse racing plays in stimulating local economies and driving financial activity in areas where these events take place.

More Than Just Horse Racing

Undeniably, the appeal of horse racing serves as a powerful magnet for visitors from across the country and even abroad. The presence of spectators significantly boosts the tourism sector, from hotel accommodations and restaurant dining to the use of local transportation services.

Racecourses, especially those that regularly host competitions, hold great potential as sports tourism destinations.

Security officers were on patrol around the horse racing area

Beyond being a competitive spectacle, these events also generate numerous job opportunities. Direct employment includes jockeys, trainers, and horse caretakers, while indirect opportunities emerge in supporting sectors, such as security personnel, photographers, catering providers, and cleaning staff.

This entire chain of activities creates a multiplier effect that strengthens the economic structure of the surrounding region.

Turning Racetracks into Pathways for Economic Growth

The appeal of horse racing is not only in its competitive atmosphere but also in its substantial contributions to local economic sectors. On a larger scale, these events attract tourists and stimulate business activity in host regions.

For example, the Keeneland Race Course is held in Lexington, Kentucky. According to a report by Icon Hot, this annual event significantly boosts the local economy. In 2022, the auction activities generated over $600 million in revenue.

Beyond direct financial gains, the event also drives demand for accommodations, restaurants, and transportation services, which in turn fuels the growth of local businesses. Moreover, Keeneland actively supports various social initiatives and charitable efforts within the Lexington community.

A similar phenomenon is evident in the United Kingdom. According to Paddock Punter, prestigious horse racing festivals such as the Grand National consistently drive growth in the hospitality, restaurant, and transport sectors.

These claims are supported by a study from Liverpool Business School, which estimated that the 2022 Grand National contributed £60 million to the Liverpool City Region economy.

These examples highlight how horse racing can serve as an economic catalyst, revitalizing host cities and delivering tangible benefits to surrounding communities.

In Indonesia, horse racing also demonstrates a positive impact on local economies. A study titled Analisis Dampak Wisata Pacuan Kuda dalam Meningkatkan Kesejahteraan Komunitas Lokal di Desa Lepadi Kecamatan Pajo Dompu, conducted by Abdul Fisal and colleagues, found that horse racing events provided economic benefits to the people of Lepadi Village.

Though temporary, the event creates job opportunities that broaden experience and economic prospects for residents. Furthermore, the success of a horse in competition increases the market value of livestock, as seen in the high bids received for horses that make it to the winner’s podium.

Throughout 2024, over 650 MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises) were directly involved by setting up official booths across race venues, proving that horse racing presents genuine business opportunities for local communities.

This demonstrates that horse racing serves not only as a sports spectacle but also as a platform for economic empowerment. These events contribute to the livelihoods of jockeys, horse breeders, and small business owners alike, generating a wide-reaching economic ripple effect throughout the region.

Racing Toward Opportunities, Tackling the Challenges

Horse racing holds significant potential to drive local economies and boost tourism. To maximize its impact, events must be managed professionally, with careful attention to safety, spectator comfort, and effective promotional strategies.

High-quality event organization can attract more visitors while opening up business opportunities and creating jobs across various supporting sectors. In this way, horse racing becomes more than just entertainment; it becomes an economic engine for the surrounding community.

At the same time, ethics and safety must remain a priority. The welfare of the horses and the protection of young jockeys require strict regulations and consistent oversight. Clear rules and animal health standards are essential to maintain public trust. These measures are critical to ensuring the sustainability of horse racing as a competitive and impactful sport.

From the Track to a Broader and More Meaningful Direction

In conclusion, horse racing has evolved into a strategic platform for driving local economic growth and reinforcing regional identity.

Behind the excitement of each race lies immense potential that spans across sectors, from tourism and job creation to community empowerment.

To ensure this potential is sustained and widely supported, professional event management is essential. Animal welfare must be prioritized, and regulations must be applied consistently.

With strong collaboration among stakeholders, horse racing can continue to advance, not only on the track but also as a force for inclusive and competitive economic development.
