As a sport that has existed for thousands of years, equestrian and horse racing terminology is indeed very extensive. It’s no surprise that new fans often need to open a dictionary to understand all of these terms.

Before moving on to terms commonly used during races, let’s first get to know some basic racehorse-related terms shared by the Facebook group IGUTIULS, which stands for Ini Grup Umamusume tapi Isinya Uma Lokal Semua (this is the Umamusume group, but the content is all local Uma).
1. Stallion: An adult male horse that has not been castrated (intact) and is usually used for breeding.
2. Mare: An adult female horse, usually over the age of 4 years.
3. Foal: A young horse from birth up to around 1 year old, regardless of gender.
4. Filly: A young female horse aged 1–4 years (not yet mature).
5. Colt: A young male horse aged 1–4 years that has not been castrated.
6. Broodmare: An adult female horse that is specially kept for reproduction (breeding mare).
7. Sire: A term for a male horse that has produced offspring.
In addition to the seven common racehorse terms above, there are also several other terms used by horse racing enthusiasts. These include:
1. Gelding: A male horse that has been castrated (cannot breed). Usually used for racing because of a more stable temperament.
2. Yearling: A young horse aged from 1 year up to before 2 years.
3. Weanling: A young horse that has just been weaned from its mother (around 6–12 months old).
4. Dam: A term for the mother mare that has produced offspring (the opposite of sire).
5. Pedigree: A horse’s lineage or family tree (for example, 4 or 5 generations).
6. Foaling: The process of a mare giving birth.
7. In-foal: A mare that is currently pregnant.
8. Maiden Mare: An adult female horse that has never given birth.
9. Racehorse: A horse that is specially trained for racing.
10. Thoroughbred: The most famous racehorse breed used in international racing.
11. Offspring / Progeny: The descendants of a sire or dam.
12. Stud / Stud Stallion: A stallion assigned specifically for breeding at a certain place (stud farm).
13. Studbook: An official book or database that records lineage, birth data, ownership, and descendants of racehorses.
14. Conformation: An evaluation of the horse’s physical structure, important for predicting performance.
