SARGA.CO – For Jendri Turangan, horse racing is not just about who’s the fastest on the track. It’s about connection. It’s about how two beings—a human and a horse—run not just with strength, but with trust and a shared will that moves as one.
The name Djohar Manik is now etched in the annals of Indonesian horse racing. More than just a racehorse, Djohar became a living legend—breaking a decade-long drought for the elusive Triple Crown title. Together with Jendri, Djohar carved out an extraordinary story—one of magic on the track and loyalty in the stables.
Jendri began his career as a national jockey at the 2006 National Championships in Pulomas, Jakarta. Riding a horse named Pitulikur, he immediately claimed the title of Best Jockey. The accolades kept coming—in 2010, 2012, and 2014. But the moment that stayed closest to his heart? The first time he rode Djohar Manik.
“Our debut race was a win. The horse was so smart. It was like he understood my heart,” Jendri recalled. From that moment on, it wasn’t just about control from the saddle; it was a quiet dialogue between two souls that simply understood each other.
Their journey to the 2014 Triple Crown was one worthy of legend. From the 1,200-meter to the 1,600-meter races, Djohar Manik was nearly untouchable. He consistently surged ahead, leaving rivals trailing like shadows. But the real miracle came during the final leg: the Indonesia Derby. Starting from the 11th gate—a dreaded position for any jockey—it seemed like a lost cause. But not for Jendri and Djohar.
“I remember whispering to him, ‘Don’t panic, stay calm.’ And he understood,” said Jendri.
In the final 600 meters, Djohar stormed from the back of the pack and crossed the finish line first. The entire stadium erupted in cheers. It was a win that bordered on the impossible.
That victory marked a golden milestone. Djohar Manik joined Manik Trisula (2002) as only the second horse in Indonesian history to win the Triple Crown. But like all great legends, his story too came to an end.
In 2024, while pregnant, Djohar fell ill with laminitis. She passed away, taking with her the glory of her triumphs and leaving behind a void. since her victory, no horse has managed to reclaim the Triple Crown.
“I miss Djohar. I don’t know how many more years it’ll take for me to find another horse like her. She was truly special,” said Jendri, eyes glistening with emotion.
An Irreplaceable Legacy
Today, Jendri continues his journey as a trainer at Tombo Ati Stable, passing on his passion and wisdom to the next generation of jockeys. But in the quiet corners of his heart, Djohar Manik remains a symbol of what pure horse racing is all about: courage, trust, and love.
Meanwhile, the Triple Crown remains the ultimate prize, waiting for a new pair, horse and jockey, to write a story as timeless as Jendri and Djohar’s.
When all eyes were on the race favorites, Mine That Bird came in as the ultimate underdog.
