SARGA.CO - Deep Brillante, the winner of the 2012 G1 Japanese Derby in a thrilling finish against Gold Ship and Fenomeno, has died at the age of 17 after complications from surgery to repair a ruptured bladder caused by urinary stones.
Paca Paca Farm, where the son of Deep Impact spent his retirement after concluding his stud career post-2023 breeding season, announced the news.
“All of us at Paca Paca Farm are deeply saddened by his death. We were delighted when he returned to his birthplace at our farm after retiring from stud duties. We will miss him very much,” they said in a statement.
Bred by Paca Paca Farm, Deep Brillante was by Japanese racing legend Deep Impact out of Love And Bubbles, a daughter of Loup Sauvage. He made a winning debut in October 2011 before announcing himself as a major prospect with a G3 Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes victory
He carried that form into the following spring, finishing second in both the Kyodo News Hai and the Spring Stakes before taking third in the G1 Satsuki Sho, Japan’s first Classic of the season.
The Japanese Derby proved to be Deep Brillante’s finest hour. Ridden by Yasunari Iwata and trained by Yoshito Yahagi, the horse determinedly prevailed in one of the race’s closest finishes, denying Fenomeno by a nose. The win gave both Yahagi and Iwata their first Japanese Derby titles.
Deep Brillante later travelled to Britain to run in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, where he finished eighth. He was later diagnosed with a tendon injury in his right foreleg, bringing his racing career to an early end.
"The little more than a year that I spent with this horse has been like a dream and for me he was nothing short of a treasure," said Yahagi at the time, as quoted by netkeiba.
Second Career at Stud
Deep Brillante retired with 3 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third in 7 starts, and ¥292,056,000 in prize money. He began his second career as a breeding stallion, initially standing at Shadai Stallion Station before later moving to Breeders Stallion Station.
Passing down the Sunday Silence and Deep Impact bloodlines, he sired multiple graded-stakes winners, including 2023 Mainichi Okan winner Elton Barows, 2020 Nikkei Shinshun Hai winner Mozu Bello, and Seda Brillantes.
His passing marks the loss of a Classic winner whose brief career left a lasting impactthrough both his Derby triumph and his progeny.
