SARGA.CO - Six-year-old gelding Cosmic Crusader completed one of Australian horse racing's toughest double acts on Saturday, storming home to win the 2026 G1 W.S. Cox Plate just a week after finishing fourth in the 2,400-metre Caulfield Cup.
Ridden by Western Australian champion William Pike, the son of Maurice swept past Birdman and Aeliana in the final strides to win the 2,040-metre race in 2:03.30.
In the first Cox Plate ever staged at Flemington while Moonee Valley undergoes redevelopment, Cosmic Crusader’s dramatic finish at Flemington not only gave Pike his first win of the race, but also made trainer Andrea Leek the second female trainer to win Australia's premier weight-for-age championship.
For Pike, it was the missing jewel in a decorated riding career, while for Leek, who trains a stable of just 18 horses, it was a crowning achievement
Few horses attempt the demanding 7-day turnaround from the Caulfield Cup to the Cox Plate, but Cosmic Crusader not only backed it up; he actually improved. "I said to owner Bob Peters this morning that he's better than last week," Leek said after the race.
The race unfolded at a genuine tempo before Birdman looked poised to claim victory. Pike, however, widely regarded as one of Australia's greatest jockeys, had patiently settled Cosmic Crusader before unleashing his late surge in the straight.
The Western Australian visitor gradually wore down Birdman before snatching victory near the finish, with Aeliana close behind in third and Ceolwulf finishing fourth.
Bruce McAvaney described it as "an outstanding edition of the W.S. Cox Plate," while form analyst Lizzie Jelfs praised the gelding's toughness in backing up so successfully after the Caulfield Cup.
Andrea Leek's Magnificent Moment
Beyond another G1 success, Andrea Leek became the second woman ever to train a Cox Plate winner, joining Moira Murdoch, who won with Solvit in 1994.
There was also extra emotional weight, as earlier this year, Leek took full control of the stable after her husband John received a three-year disqualification over a stomach-tubing offence. Throughout the spring, she continued to guide Cosmic Crusader through the biggest campaign of his career.
Standing beside her champion after the race, the trainer was still processing the moment’s magnitude. "I feel like an imposter," Leek admitted. "It will take a bit of time to sink in." She also paid tribute to her husband, saying nobody would be happier for her despite watching from home.
A Historic Day at Flemington
Around 35,000 racegoers at this year's Cox Plate witnessed a once-in-a-generation feat, knowing it may never happen again. The unusual venue did nothing to diminish the spectacle; instead, it produced a finish worthy of the Cox Plate's rich history.
Cosmic Crusader's victory now sits alongside the race's greatest stories: a Western Australian warrior completing a gruelling seven-day turnaround, William Pike finally claiming his elusive Cox Plate, and Andrea Leek breaking another barrier for women in Australian racing.
Sometimes the biggest stage just needs the right horse and team to make history.
