SARGA.CO - Long-shot Kingswood gave trainer Gavin Bedggood his biggest career win by winning the 150th running of the G1 Caulfield Cup at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday, 17 October 2026. The seven-year-old gray, ridden by John Allen, surged home to defeat fellow grey Saint George by half a length in the A$6.55 million staying feature.
However, a serious fall in the closing stages overshadowed the celebrations.
Defending champion Half Yours fell in the home straight, bringing down Ohope Wins. While Half Yours was able to return to the stables, Ohope Wins sustained fatal injuries and was humanely euthanised. Both jockeys involved, Mark Zahra and Jye McNeil, were taken to hospital for further assessment.
Kingswood’s Career-Defining Victory
Carrying 55 kilograms, Kingswood overcame a wide gate 17 and a challenging run to claim the 2,400-metre handicap. Allen kept him travelling comfortably before he began his chargein the straight and took the lead with around 100 metres remaining. Saint George, trained by Ciaron Maher, chased strongly but could not bridge the gap, finishing half a length behind. Enfjaar, trained by Roger Varian, came third, while pre-race favourite Cosmic Crusader finished fourth.
Bedggood credited his team in preparing Kingswood for the demanding contest. The gelding had finished fourth in the G1 Might And Power Stakes the previous weekend, and his connections focused on managing his recovery before the Cup. Winning jockey Allen also praised the preparation, describing Kingswood’s performance as an outstanding effort after a difficult passage early in the race.
A Dramatic Finish and a Tragic Loss
With around 250 metres remaining, Half Yours fell in the home straight. The defending champion, who had completed the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double in 2025, went down after an incident involving limited room and contact with another runner. Ohope Wins, ridden by McNeil, could not avoid the fallen horse and also came down.
Half Yours regained his feet and returned to the mounting area. His co-trainer Tony McEvoy later reported that the gelding appeared bright and composed, with lacerations that initially appeared superficial. Veterinarians examined him following the incident.
The news was far worse for Ohope Wins. The New Zealand-bred mare, trained by Chris Waller and owned by Yulong, was attended to by the on-course veterinary team but could not be saved because of the severity of her injuries. Racing Victoria confirmed that the former dual G1 winner of the New Zealand Oaks and the ATC Australian Oaks was humanely euthanised.
Zahra and McNeil were both reported conscious and alert after the fall and were transported to hospital for observation. Racing Victoria stewards said the incident would be investigated, with a further review by veterinary officials also planned.
The 150th Caulfield Cup
First run in 1879, the Caulfield Cup is one of Australia’s most prestigious staying handicaps and an important lead-up race to the Melbourne Cup. Its 150th edition attracted a strong international and domestic field, with contenders including Cosmic Crusader, Zahrann, Wine Dark Sea and Half Yours.
Kingswood’s victory was a major upset, rewarding his connections for maintaining confidence in the gelding despite his wide draw and the depth of the field. Saint George’s second-place finish also gave the race a one-two for grey horses, while Enfjaar secured third for the visiting British-trained contingent.
