SARGA.CO - On Saturday, 17 October, at the G1 The Everest at Royal Randwick,Godolphin’s Tempted defeated Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising by a neck in a career-defining performance. In a thrilling finish to Australia’s A$20 million sprint, the four-year-old mare held off the world’s highest-rated racehorse to claim the world’s richest turf race, when it was the other way around last year.

Ka Ying Rising, partnered by Zac Purton, was attempting to defend his Everest crown and extend his win streak to 22 races. Instead, the six-year-old gelding suffered his first defeat since January 2024, ending a 21-victory run that had lasted over 1,000 days. Joliestar finished third, another neck behind Ka Ying Rising, completing a closely contested finish among the leading three runners.
Tempted’s victory owed much to a well-executed ride from Chad Schofield, who fully used gate 1 to secure a favourable inside position, as Ka Ying Rising failed to find the prominent position his connections had hoped for from gate 11.

The latter horse’s lack of experience on heavier ground also came back to bite him on the rain-affected Randwick track, even though the surface had improved to soft before the start.

Schofield kept Tempted travelling smoothly before asking her to accelerate in the straight. She responded strongly, stretching clear as Ka Ying Rising launched his late challenge from wider on the track. Purton’s mount closed rapidly in the final strides, but Tempted had done enough to hold on at the finish.

“The first and third horse had dream runs and we had a horror run, being six-wide with no cover, but he was brave,” Ka Ying Rising’s trainer David Hayes said, as quoted by Idol Horse. “I love the way he finished, but I hate the result.”

The result reversed the placings from the 2025 Everest, when Ka Ying Rising defeated Tempted by approximately one and a quarter lengths. Since then, Tempted herself had remained unbeaten, building momentum for a rematch. “It’s amazing. I thought she’d run a PB (personal best) today. She had to be phenomenal and she was,” her trainer Ciaron Maher said, as quoted by Racing Post. Tempted’s success also marked Maher’s second Everest win, following Bella Nipotina in 2024.
