SARGA.CO - Early Voting, winner of the 2022 G1 Preakness Stakes and one of North America’s promising young sires, was euthanised on 20 October 2026 following an acute onset of irreversible colic. He was seven years old.
Dr Padraig O’Casaigh, a veterinary researcher who aided and acquired a 90% share in the stallion in July 2026, announced the news. Early Voting had begun to make an impression as a sire, with his first crop producing G1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes winner Miss Monica, before his career at stud was cut short.
The Paulick Report reported that O’Casaigh and the Early Voting Consortium paid tribute to the horse’s racing ability and affectionate nature. “He loved being a star and now he will live on through his prodigious progeny,” the statement read.
Derby Skipper and Preakness Winner
Bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm, Early Voting was a son of Gun Runner out of the Tiznow mare Amour d’Ete. Trainer Chad Brown and owner Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables purchased him for US$200,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Early Voting won his first two starts, including the G3 Withers Stakes by 4½ lengths in February 2022. He followed that up with a narrow second-place finish behind Mo Donegal in the G2 Wood Memorial Stakes, making himself a leading contender for the American Triple Crown.
Although he had qualified for the Kentucky Derby, Brown opted to bypass the race and prepare the lightly raced colt for the 2022 Preakness Stakes instead. With Jose Ortiz aboard, Early Voting tracked the pace before taking the lead in the stretch at Pimlico. He held off Epicenter to win by 1¼ lengths, giving Gun Runner his first US Classic as a sire.
Finishing outside the top three in the Jim Dandy Stakes and Travers Stakes, the latter wasEarly Voting’s final race, leaving him with 3 wins from 6 starts and career earnings of US$1,372,500.
An Unusual Challenge at Stud
Early Voting entered stud at Ashford Stud in Kentucky for the 2023 breeding season. However, fertility problems emerged later that year, when he struggled to impregnate mares because of anejaculatory syndrome, a condition in which a stallion is unable to ejaculate despite displaying normal sexual behaviour.
He moved to Taylor Made Stallions for the 2024 breeding season, where O’Casaigh and the team worked to restore his reproductive function. The treatment proved successful, allowing the stallion to resume breeding. He covered 77 mares in 2024, 64 in 2025 and 89 in 2026, according to TrueNicks.
Despite his challenges, Early Voting’s first runners began to establish his reputation as a sire in 2026. His leading progeny was Miss Monica, who won the G1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes in September for trainer Bob Baffert. He Is No Lie also showed promise, finishing second in both the G3 Iroquois Stakes and the Bashford Manor Stakes.
Stallion Career Cut Short
At the time of his death, Early Voting ranked seventh on the North American freshman sire list by progeny earnings, with US$1,246,672 earned. He had produced 13 winners from 41 starters.
Earlier in October, Taylor Made announced an advertised stud fee of US$50,000 for the 2027 breeding season, up from US$12,500 in 2026. A lifetime breeding share was also scheduled to be offered at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale.
Early Voting’s death ends a career that moved from Classic glory to an unusual struggle with fertility, followed by a successful return to breeding and an encouraging start as a sire. Although the Preakness winner’s time at stud was brief, his progeny’s early achievements offer a lasting connection.
