SARGA.CO – The Star of Stars Indonesia class is widely regarded as the highest stage for Indonesian racehorses. Run over a distance of 2,200 meters as part of the National Championship Series II every October, this class is not merely a test of speed, but a comprehensive challenge of stamina, racing intelligence, and performance consistency. Yet from nearly two decades of champions, one intriguing question emerges: who has been more dominant—stallions or mares?
Looking at the list of winners since 2007, stallions clearly dominated the early era of Star of Stars Indonesia. Names such as Star Show, Bintang Klabat, and Poseidon set the tone with consecutive victories. The most outstanding, however, was Saud, a stallion from Central Java who claimed five consecutive titles from 2010 to 2014 under jockey J. Turangan.
Stallions also reaffirmed their dominance through victories by Red Silenos (2016) and Manguni Makasiouw (2019), reinforcing the reputation of male horses as symbols of strength and endurance over middle-to-long distances.
The balance of power began to shift in 2015, when Djohar Manik, a mare, captured the Star of Stars title. Far from a one-off surprise, Djohar Manik went on to secure three titles (2015, 2017, and 2018), establishing herself as a new icon in this elite class.
In recent years, the dominance of mares has become increasingly evident. Queen Thalassa reigned supreme with two titles (2021 and 2023), followed by Lyana Nagari (2022) and Queen Divona (2024). Over the past four years, three out of four Star of Stars titles have been claimed by mares.
The Numbers Tell the Story
Out of a total of 18 editions of Star of Stars Indonesia (2007–2024), stallions have won 10 titles, while mares have secured 8.
Although stallions still hold a slight numerical advantage, recent trends suggest that mares are becoming increasingly dominant—particularly in terms of consistency and racing intelligence over the demanding 2,200-meter distance.
With new generations of racehorses emerging from various provinces, the ongoing contest between the raw power of stallions and the tactical intelligence of mares is certain to remain one of the most compelling narratives in the Star of Stars Indonesia class.
