SARGA.CO - On Tuesday, 3 November, Point Of Law powered past a runaway leader to win the 166th G1 Melbourne Cup, securing Australia's top staying race for trainer Ciaron Maher and jockey Ethan Brown at Flemington. Formerly owned by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, the four-year-old Frankel colt defeated stablemate Zahrann by 3¾ lengths, with Juja Kibo completing an all-Maher trifecta in the $10.2 million and 3,200 metre contest.

It marks Brown’s first Melbourne Cup and Maher's second since Gold Trip in 2022. Point Of Law also became the first Northern Hemisphere three-year-old to win the Cup since Cross Counter in 2018, achieving it in just his sixth career start.

Point Of Law Overcomes a Royal Lead
At the start, Royal Supremacy took command and front-ran a wide 20-length lead by the 1,000-metre mark, even leading into the 400-metre straight by around 12 lengths.
However, Brown patiently positioned Point Of Law before unleashing his finishing kickdown Flemington's long straight. He reeled in the tired leader before overtaking and chargingclear around 150 metres from home, winning in 3:21.88 as Zahrann and Juja Kibo followed their stablemate across the line.
“I certainly didn't know Royal Supremacy was going to lead by that far but there's nothing better than a true staying test,” trainer Maher told Channel Nine. “Point Of Law has just thrived and I can't thank all the team and the owners enough

Ethan Brown's Dream Comes True
For Ethan Brown, the magnitude of his achievement was hard to comprehend. “I've got to pinch myself here,” he expressed during the trophy presentation.
As quoted by ABC News (Australia), the Alice Springs-born jockey credited Maher for supporting his career and giving him opportunities throughout their partnership.
“He took me out of horse training at one stage when I was about 22 years old. But yeah, he's done nothing but support me and backed me,” Brown said.
Brown also described Point Of Law's acceleration as the decisive factor, saying, “Just stay cool, stay patient, cut the bend. And once he got that clear running, his turn of foot was enormous. He's going to be a superstar horse. This horse is something special.”
Historic Day for Ciaron Maher
By training Point Of Law, Zahrann and Juja Kibo to finish first, second and third, Ciaron Maher became the first trainer in the race's 166-year history to accomplish the feat. The stable also finished fifth with Royal Supremacy and sixth with Shockletz, placing five of Maher's seven runners inside the first six.
With the Melbourne Cup in his trophy cabinet alongside the Geelong Cup, Point Of Law has truly arrived as one of the most exciting stayers from the 2026 Australian spring carnival.
