SARGA.CO – Hong Kong’s top trainer, Danny Shum, has revealed the big plan behind the upcoming season of Romantic Warrior, the seven-year-old superstar. Ahead of his comeback in the G2 BOCHK Jockey Club Cup this weekend, Shum confirmed that his champion is in top shape — and is even being considered for one of Dubai’s biggest races.
Romantic Warrior came close to glory in last year’s Dubai Turf, losing by a narrow margin to Soul Rush. But this season, Shum has something different — and far more daring — in mind: the Dubai World Cup, a dirt-surface race that stands as one of the richest and most prestigious in the world.
“He’s healthy, happy, and very ready. We’ll try the Hong Kong Cup, then the Saudi Cup. After that, maybe one more shot at Dubai — but this time, the Dubai World Cup,” Shum told Horse Idol.
The decision is surprising, considering Romantic Warrior is known as a turf specialist. But Shum believes his performances this season will determine whether this strategic shift is possible.
Romantic Warrior underwent a minor surgery last May, with screws inserted into his left front leg after a demanding Middle Eastern campaign. He has now completed three trials and one gallop, all with positive reports.
According to Shum, his physical condition is back to its prime. “He’s at the same level as last season. Not better, but not worse. After the surgery he stabilized, and all his work shows he’s ready,” he said.
Romantic Warrior’s comeback will immediately be tested in a heated G2 duel against Voyage Bubble. This matchup is more than just two elite horses — it's also a clash between two world-class jockeys.
James McDonald, the Longines World’s Best Jockey, will ride Romantic Warrior, facing eight-time Hong Kong champion jockey Zac Purton aboard Voyage Bubble. Their face-off has become a major highlight for racing fans worldwide.
Why Hugh Bowman Became the “Trusted Hands”
Shum also shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story. Whenever McDonald is away from Hong Kong, Hugh Bowman becomes the trusted jockey for Romantic Warrior’s trials and gallops. And apparently, the arrangement isn’t as simple as “just choosing a backup rider.”
Initially, Shum actually wanted to appoint Zac Purton as McDonald’s replacement. However, after discussing it with McDonald and owner Peter Lau, the decision changed drastically.
“James is very close to Hugh. At first, I asked Zac, but James said, ‘No, use Hugh.’ So if James is unavailable, Hugh is the first priority,” Shum explained.
Bowman has ridden the horse in the last eight trials, giving him an intimate understanding of Romantic Warrior’s character.
Adding more spice to the drama, Zac Purton once rode Romantic Warrior when he narrowly lost to Russian Emperor in 2023. Now, he’s on the rival side aboard Voyage Bubble — and is determined to halt the momentum of McDonald and Romantic Warrior.
With Romantic Warrior back in top condition, Shum remains confident. “He’s a global star, and I’m very confident for this weekend,” he said.
