SARGA.CO – Many may have first heard of Wonder Acute through the Uma Musume: Pretty Derby franchise. But in real life, he is far more than just another horse—he’s an icon of toughness, clever race strategy, and an inspiring story of perseverance well into old age.
Foaled on March 14, 2006, Wonder Acute is the offspring of Charismatic—the American Kentucky Derby winner—and Wonder Heritage, a Japanese mare.
His pedigree alone promised greatness, but what set him apart was not just noble blood. His staying power and unwavering dedication to the track were rare in the world of horse racing.
Owned by Nobuyuki Yamamoto and trained by Masao Sato, Wonder Acute became a specialist on dirt tracks, battling top competitors like Transcend and Espoir City.
Ridden by elite jockeys such as Yutaka Take and Ryuji Wada, he was known for his “senkou” or stalker racing style—shadowing rivals from behind and striking at the decisive moment. This tactic required not only strength but keen instincts and intelligence.
His racing career spanned 2009 to 2015, an impressively long run for a thoroughbred. Across 48 starts, Wonder Acute achieved 13 victories and 10 runner-up finishes.
Among his top achievements were the 2012 JBC Classic, 2014 Teio Sho, and 2015 Kashiwa Kinen—the latter marking his final win before retirement.
Even at nine years old, he remained competitive at the highest level, earning respect not just for speed but for sheer fighting spirit.
After retirement, Wonder Acute didn’t simply fade away. He became a stallion, passing on his hardy bloodline. To date, he has sired 59 foals, including Wonder Siang Praw and Wonder Icho, who carry forward his vigor and competitive spirit for the next generation of racehorses.
During his retirement, Wonder Acute faced a life-threatening illness that nearly claimed him. But, true to his racing days, he refused to give in, fighting both sickness and age.
Fans admire him not only for his track record but also for the indomitable spirit that defines his legacy.
Now Wonder Acute enjoys a second life as a charming character in Uma Musume: Pretty Derby.
Portrayed as mature, elegant, and strategically sharp, the anime version perfectly mirrors the real Wonder Acute: calm, patient, and ready to strike at the perfect moment—always a delightful surprise in any race.
