SARGA.CO – Beneath the glitter of Japan’s racing scene stands a name that not only carved history but also silenced a long-whispered family myth: Satono Crown. Today, his story lives on not only on the track but also through a character in the hit game and anime Uma Musume: Pretty Derby, introducing this champion to a new generation.
Foaled on March 10, 2012, Satono Crown was bred from two Irish bloodlines: Marju, a sire celebrated for remarkable stamina, and Jioconda II, a dam from an elite racing lineage. With his elegant dark-bay coat and international pedigree, Crown was destined for stardom from the start.
Trained by the highly respected Nobuyuki Hori, Crown soon proved himself the next big name in the Satono family, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Satono Diamond.
Satono Crown favored the sashi (closer) style—holding a middle or rear position before unleashing a breathtaking burst of speed in the final turn. Partnering with top jockeys such as Mirco Demuro and Yuichi Fukunaga, this strategy made him a constant, unpredictable threat.
Breaking the “Satono Curse”
Despite their deep pockets and talent, the Satono stable had long failed to win a Grade 1 (G1) race, a drought fans dubbed the “Satono Curse.”
The tide began to turn with Satono Diamond, but Crown proved it was no fluke.
In 2016, he captured the G1 Hong Kong Vase, showing Satono's dominance beyond Japan. The following year, he stunned rivals Kitasan Black and Cheval Grand with a commanding victory in the prestigious Takarazuka Kinen, cementing a new era of Satono success.
A year later, he scored a stunning victory in the Takarazuka Kinen (G1), defeating formidable rivals like Kitasan Black and Cheval Grand by a significant margin. Within a decade, Crown had not only helped shatter old myths but also ushered in a new era of glory for the Satono name.
Retirement and Legacy
After his final run in the 2018 Japan Cup, where he was beaten by Almond Eye, Satono Crown retired to stud at Shadai Stallion Station. He has since sired more than 300 foals, including emerging names like Tastiera and Satono Cloak, carrying forward hopes for the next great Satono generation.
Satono Crown’s popularity earned him a place in Uma Musume: Pretty Derby, portrayed as elegant, ambitious, and loyal. Through this character, younger fans who never witnessed his races can experience the spirit and achievements of the champion.
From promising prospect to myth-breaker, Satono Crown proved that legacy is forged not by superstition but by determination, speed, and consistency.
On the racetrack and in the digital world of Uma Musume, the name Satono Crown endures as a conqueror of the finish line and a true heir to glory.
