SARGA.CO – The equestrian world is in mourning. Valegro, the legendary dressage horse who carried Charlotte Dujardin to three Olympic gold medals, has passed away at the age of 23. The news was confirmed by Dujardin and his trainer, as well as owner, Carl Hester, who announced that Valegro had to be euthanized due to age-related health issues.
Valegro’s passing is not just the loss of a horse, but the departure of one of the greatest icons in the history of equestrian sport.
The King of British Dressage
Valegro is known as the most successful dressage horse in the history of Great Britain. Together with Charlotte Dujardin, he achieved accomplishments that are nearly impossible to match: Individual Gold – London 2012, Team Gold – London 2012, and Individual Gold – Rio 2016.
Not only that, the pair broke multiple world records and dominated the international dressage arena with performances often described not as competing, but as dancing.
“We danced, Blueberry…” A Heartbreaking Farewell
In her tribute post, Dujardin referred to Valegro by his beloved nickname, “Blueberry.” “We danced, Blueberry, didn’t we dance?” wrote Dujardin, capturing the depth of their bond — far beyond that of rider and horse.
Dujardin has often said their relationship was a “once in a lifetime” connection, something emotionally profound and impossible to describe in words.
Tragically, it was also announced on the same day that Uthopia, another iconic British dressage horse who contributed greatly to the sport and was a teammate of Valegro during the golden era of British dressage, had also passed away. Uthopia died at the age of 24.
Carl Hester, who trained and co-owned both horses, described their passing as “a final act of loyalty and dignity,” emphasizing the immense influence these two horses had on the equestrian world.
Valegro retired in 2016, right after a spectacular farewell performance at the London International Horse Show. That stage became a public tribute to one of the greatest horses ever, filled with applause, tears, and gratitude.
Since then, Valegro lived peacefully at Carl Hester’s estate, enjoying his old age far from the noise of competition.
