SARGA.CO – An unusual incident occurred in Japan on Monday morning, January 5, 2026, when a horse belonging to a university equestrian club suddenly escaped from its stable and leisurely wandered around the city before returning to campus on its own about 20 minutes later.
The incident took place at around 7:30 a.m. local time in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, after residents reported seeing a dark brown horse roaming near Ikuta Station in the Tama Ward area. Witnesses contacted the police after spotting the horse trotting along a public road.
Videos circulating on social media show the horse calmly walking down the street, still wrapped in a blanket, while a police patrol car followed behind with its siren on as a safety measure. The post quickly went viral, garnering more than 3.7 million views and tens of thousands of likes on X (formerly Twitter).
According to Japanese media reports cited by the police, the nine-year-old horse belongs to the equestrian club of Meiji University and somehow managed to escape from its stable. Authorities and the university are still investigating how the horse managed to get out of its enclosure.
What surprised many was that after roaming residential areas and the vicinity of the station for about 20 minutes, the horse returned to its campus on its own, without any human assistance. There were no reports of injuries or damage to infrastructure resulting from the incident.
Local police stated that patrol units followed the horse as a precaution to prevent it from panicking or causing traffic accidents while on public roads. The exact cause of the escape remains under investigation, including the possibility of damage to the stable gate or lapses in supervision.
The unique incident sparked a wide range of reactions on social media, with some users comparing it to scenes of runaway horses in popular culture, such as those often depicted in horse racing games or anime. Others joked that the horse looked like it was “taking a relaxed morning city stroll before heading back to work.”
