SARGA.CO – Australia mourns the loss of one of its greatest racehorses. Dual WS Cox Plate champion So You Think has passed away after a short illness. The sad news was confirmed by Coolmore Australia, where the legendary stallion spent his retirement years.
According to abc.net.au, the 2006-born stallion took his final breath while being treated at Scone Equine Hospital, located in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales.
A Brilliant Racing Career
Trained by two of the biggest names in horse racing — Bart Cummings and Aidan O’Brien — So You Think became an icon on the track after winning the WS Cox Plate in back-to-back years (2009 and 2010).
In his first Cox Plate triumph, Glen Boss was the jockey in the saddle. The following year, Steven Arnold took over and guided So You Think to another commanding victory at Moonee Valley.
But his brilliance wasn’t confined to Australia. So You Think went on to make a mark on the international stage, with one of his most memorable wins coming in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (2012) at Ascot, England.
From Champion to World-Class Sire
After retiring from racing in 2012, So You Think began a new chapter as a stallion at Coolmore Stud — and he was just as successful. According to Coolmore, he has sired 12 individual Group 1 winners, securing his place among Australia’s elite sires.
“He was an exceptionally intelligent horse — calm, composed, and full of character. Today is a very sad day for our entire team,” said Tom Magnier of Coolmore Australia in a statement on X.
“We were incredibly lucky to have him, both as a racehorse and a sire. He gave us so many unforgettable memories on racetracks around the world.”
A son of High Chaparral, So You Think was renowned for his power, consistency, and competitive spirit. Among his other great achievements were a third-place finish in the 2010 Melbourne Cup and back-to-back victories in the Tattersalls Gold Cup in Ireland (2011 & 2012).
The late Bart Cummings, the legendary trainer with 12 Melbourne Cup titles, once described him as “perfection on four legs — the most genuine horse I ever trained.”
In recognition of his extraordinary career and contribution to horse racing, So You Think was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2019 — a fitting tribute to a horse whose legacy will gallop on forever.
