SARGA.CO – Blue seas, crashing waves, and the thunder of racing hooves. This exotic combination can only be found in one place in Indonesia: the Legok Jawa Racecourse, located in Pangandaran Regency, West Java. But behind its beauty and spectacular backdrop overlooking the Indian Ocean, this racetrack hides its challenges—especially for racehorses unaccustomed to the heavy terrain of beach sand.
Situated right along Madasari Beach in Cimerak District, Legok Jawa is one of only two seaside racecourses in the world. Yet its beauty comes with a price: the track surface is heavier and less stable compared to traditional dirt courses.
Unlike Bantul (Yogyakarta) or Tegalwaton (Central Java), which use compacted soil, Legok Jawa uses natural beach sand. This forces horses to work harder with every stride. More power is required, stamina drains more quickly, and maintaining rhythm becomes the key.
“If a horse isn’t used to the character of beach sand, it can lose footing and speed. That’s where the real challenge lies,” explained one trainer from a West Java stable.
Training by the Sea: The Key to Conquering Legok Jawa
Several experienced stables have even begun preparing their horses weeks in advance by training them along coastal areas. The goal is clear: to strengthen their legs and lungs for the heavy conditions of Legok Jawa’s track.
This adaptation becomes a vital part of race strategy, particularly for sprint and Derby Prospect classes that demand steady speed.
Total area of 18 hectares: Making it one of Indonesia’s largest racecourses located within a tourist destination.
Oval track of 1,200 meters: With a width of 16 meters and a 300-meter straight line for sprint-class speed duels.
Wide, safe turns: A design favored by jockeys, as it allows maneuvering in curves with reduced risk.
During major events such as Indonesia’s Horse Racing (IHR) – Merdeka Cup 2025, this track is not just a competition stage, but also a proving ground. The best horses from seven provinces will compete, but only those prepared for the heavy sand and coastal winds will reach the podium.
Whereas other racecourses like Bantul or Tegalwaton do not use beach sand, at Legok Jawa, the track surface is exactly that, making every stride heavier and demanding extra strength.
