According to Michael T. Martin’s 1999 study, assessing a horse's age through dental inspection is both an art and a science, as many factors come into play, including tooth eruption patterns, surface wear, and the rate of dental erosion.
Teeth as a Horse’s “ID Card”
A horse’s teeth change over time. For instance, the first molars appear around age one, followed by the emergence of permanent teeth between ages two and three. The third molar usually appears around age four, while canine teeth develop between ages three and six.
Adult horses have different tooth counts: males typically have around 40 teeth, while females have about 36. Changes in the shape and edges of the incisors (front teeth) are often used as benchmarks—visible wear begins between ages six and eight, becoming more pronounced by ages 10 to 11.
In addition to dental clues, other physical traits such as hooves, mane, and overall appearance—like the clarity of the eyes—can also serve as age and health indicators. For example, cracked or damaged hooves may suggest a history of heavy work or underlying health issues.

Estimating a horse’s age should ideally be done by an equine dental specialist to avoid inaccuracies. Diet, lifestyle, and care all affect dental condition, requiring professional analysis for a reliable assessment.

With proper nutrition—rich in vitamins, minerals, protein, and iron—even older mares can remain productive. Age doesn’t have to be a barrier if the horse receives the right care.
