SARGA.CO – Not all retired racehorses end up living miserable lives. Though it can’t be denied, some horses aren’t so lucky and end up pulling carriages or performing as entertainment in circuses.
But fate is unpredictable. A retired racehorse might turn out to have a hidden talent beyond the racetrack — including becoming an artist.
This is what happened to a purebred Thoroughbred that used to be a racehorse and is now famous as a “painting horse.”
The nickname isn’t just for show. The horse literally paints on canvas. Blue, the painting-prodigy horse, was adopted by his owner, Erika Tully, three years ago when he was 21 years old.
Tully noticed Blue’s habit of picking up objects like brooms, hoses, and similar items with his mouth. Observing this quirk, she decided to experiment with a unique idea.
She attached a paintbrush to a carrot and gave Blue a canvas to work on.
The idea worked. Blue started painting because he was motivated by the carrot as a reward. But the habit didn’t stop there. Blue no longer needed the carrot prompt to paint — he genuinely enjoyed the process.
Tully even said they could paint for up to five consecutive days.
Blue’s paintings aren’t just strokes of paint on canvas. Sometimes bits of dirt and strands of Blue’s own hair end up on the artwork because the brush might slip from his mouth while painting.
According to People, Blue’s artwork is sold through Tully’s shop, Neapolitan Wine Shop, and her website, Eclectic Dandelion.
So far, around a dozen of Blue’s paintings have been sold. And it’s not just Tully who enjoys watching him paint — everyone at the barn smiles whenever they see him in action.
