SARGA.CO – When the sound of hooves echoed during the ceremonial parade carrying the Sacred Flag and the Proclamation Manuscript from Monas to the State Palace, the presence of these horses was more than just animals. These finest horses are loyal companions of soldiers, guardians of tradition, and symbols of honor.
"The mounted cavalry of the Ronggolawe Horse Cavalry Regiment and the 1st Sembrani Horse Cavalry Battalion added to the solemn atmosphere in the lead-up to the 80th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia."
But who exactly are these horses, and what breeds do the Indonesian Army Cavalry ride? Let’s get to know them better:
Based on research by UGM’s Biology Department, the Indonesian Army’s Horse Cavalry Detachment (Denkavkud) uses several elite breeds, including Crossbreeds, Thoroughbreds, Andalusians, Ponies, and Akhal-Tekes.
Other reports also mention Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods, Andalusians, and Anglo-Arabians as part of the military collection.
This means the cavalry horses of the Indonesian Army are a smart blend of some of the world’s greatest breeds.
According to Professor Sri Bandiati, cavalry commanders usually select horses with an average height of about 130 cm, considered suitable for the average stature of Indonesian soldiers.
UGM records also note that the average height of operational horses in Denkavkud is around 147 cm, weighing about 336 kilograms. Though not very tall, these cavalry horses possess strength, a calm character, and stable physiques.
Colors and Markings: Not Just Beautiful, But Full of Character
UGM research also found that the horse population in the cavalry is dominated by coat colors such as bay, grey, seal brown, and chestnut.
They often feature markings such as stripes, blazes, and stars, which aid in identification and give each horse a distinct visual character.
Research notes that an ideal cavalry horse should have a dark, solid color, be able to carry at least 100 kg, be physically sound and resilient, and pass military horse training.
These horses are trained at Darmasiswa Parongpong, West Bandung. They learn to withstand loud noises, resist fire, and even cross rivers calmly.
They are not just historical assets, but also companions who dedicate their lives to upholding the dignity of the nation.
