SARGA.CO - After 21 starts, 7 wins, 2 consecutive Takamatsunomiya Kinen titles and a career spent taking on the world’s finest sprinters, Satono Reve has been announced as retired on 7 September by trainer Noriyuki Hori.
His final race came on 22 August in Britain, when he finished ninth in the City of York Stakes. The seven-year-old returned home to Japan on 6 September and is currently undergoing import quarantine at the JRA Horse Racing School before starting a new chapter as a stallion at Shadai Stallion Station.

But while Satono Reve will now join one of Japan's most famous stallion rosters, his story began far away from the glamour associated with Shadai. With a prestigious pedigree and a name meaning “dream” in French, Satono Reve was foaled on 22 March 2019, at Shirai Farm in Hidaka, Hokkaido.

His sire was Lord Kanaloa, a two-time Sprinters Stakes winner, two-time Hong Kong Sprint winner and JRA Hall of Famer. His dam, Ciliege, was by another legendary Japanese sprinter, Sakura Bakushin O, himself a two-time Sprinters Stakes winner and JRA Hall of Fame inductee.
Though he carried the Satono prefix, and was sold at the 2019 JRHA Select Sale for ¥54 million before entering the Miho Training Center, Satono Reve was a Hidaka horse before earning his place at Shadai Stallion Station. And from that part of Hokkaido, he eventually reached the top of Japanese sprinting.

Satono Reve's defining domestic achievement came at Chukyo Racecourse, where he won the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen in 2025, and then returned to defend his crown in 2026. His 2025 season also earned him the JRA Award for Best Sprinter.
However, this came after Satono Reve had already established himself as an international campaigner.

In a written statement, trainer Hori said, “We were unable to achieve a G1 victory overseas, and as a team we keenly feel that we still have more to improve on. Even so, it was an invaluable experience, and we are determined to carry what we learned forward,” as quoted by netkeiba.
Yet there was no sense that the campaign had been wasted, as Hori empathised how carefully Satono Reve had been managed throughout his travels, particularly after spending four months in Britain.

Hori said, as quoted by netkeiba.

“Since travelling to Britain, he was able to make three starts consistently, and I am full of gratitude to him for continuing to give his best,” added Hori.
That perhaps best describes Satono Reve: a persistent competitor who has shown incredible fight and heart throughout his career, and who can finally rest.

Satono Reve retires with 7 wins from 21 starts, 4 graded stakes victories and total career prize money of around $5.86 million. He leaves racing as a dual G1 winner, a JRA award winner and a successful racer on three continents.
Now he will stand alongside his sire, Lord Kanaloa, on the Shadai Stallion Station roster. Although Satono Reve never quite reached his same heights internationally, he came close and often enough to make people take notice.
At seven years old, he trades the noise of the racecourse for the quieter life of a stallion, with the legacy of a sprinter who kept travelling, competing and meeting the world's best without surrendering his dignity.
