SARGA.CO — In the long track of Indonesia’s horse racing history, one name is always spoken with respect: Cempaka. A chestnut mare from East Java who carved her name in gold as the first locally bred horse to win the Indonesia Derby, back in 1976 — an era dominated by mixed-blood and imported bloodlines.
At that time, the two previous editions — the 1974 and 1975 Indonesia Derby — had been won by G1 (crossbred) horses. That’s why Cempaka’s victory came as both a shock and a source of pride for Indonesia’s local racing scene.
“The first and only local-type horse to win the Indonesia Derby,” said senior trainer Wahono AT in an interview on Baharna TV’s YouTube channel.
It was a statement that Cempaka’s achievement was not just a win, but a symbol — proof that local horses could compete at the highest level.
Cempaka was sired by Boy Blimbing and out of the mare Melati. Not many expected her to become a champion in top-class racing, but her performance told a different story. Based on recorded times, Cempaka could cover 400 meters in 25.7 seconds, an impressive speed that showcased exceptional athletic quality for a locally bred horse of her era.
In the 1976 Indonesia Derby, Cempaka was ridden by jockey B. Pantow and trained by Mas Slamet. She represented the hard work of Stal Pamulang, paving the way and inspiring the growth of Indonesia’s local horse racing industry at the time.
