SARGA.CO – In recent years, female racehorses from West Sumatra have consistently dominated the track and climbed podiums at prestigious events. Names like Romantic Spartan, Volcanic, Emmera, and Wonder Land have dazzled fans, becoming symbols of a powerful new force from the Minangkabau heartland in Indonesia’s racing scene.
But an intriguing question arises: why are so many outstanding racehorses from West Sumatra female? Are fillies naturally faster developers—or is there something else behind this trend?
According to veteran jockey Rudy Rahmat, it’s no coincidence. He explains that the phenomenon is closely tied to the foal crop of previous years.
“It’s because, during that particular foaling season, many top-bloodline broodmares in West Sumatra produced fillies,”
Rudy told SARGA.CO.
In other words, during one breeding season, a large number of elite mares gave birth to well-bred female foals. Combined with strong genetics and solid training management, these fillies matured quickly and began performing impressively at an early age.
The achievements of West Sumatran fillies are indeed striking. Take Romantic Spartan, widely regarded as the most consistent and powerful young female racehorse today.
Along with Wonder Land, Romantic Spartan gave King Argentin a fierce challenge in the battle for the 2025 Triple Crown.
Then there’s Emmera, a frequent podium finisher in various two-year-old Derbies, and Volcanic, who made a sensational entrance by winning convincingly in just a few starts.
However, Rudy predicts that the trend may shift soon.
“In the next foaling season, there were more colts born in West Sumatra—future debutants for 2024 or 2025,” he added.
That means we may soon see young male horses from West Sumatra rising to compete with the fillies who have been shining so brightly. One name to watch is Sir Orbit.
So while the spotlight currently belongs to the fillies, the colts are sharpening their skills. When their time comes, West Sumatra is likely to remain one of Indonesia’s richest sources of elite racing talent—both female and male.
