SARGA.CO - In the history of Indonesian horse racing, there is one name that will never be forgotten: Cahaya Nagari. A KPI mare, born on August 21, 2006, she was the daughter of Surya Baskara and Bumi Pancasila. Despite a turbulent career, Cahaya Nagari achieved one of her most phenomenal victories: the 2010 Indonesia Derby.
But this victory wasn’t just about podium finishes or trophies. It was a story of perseverance, courage, and miracles.
A Difficult Journey From Birth
Cahaya Nagari began her life facing heavy challenges. Her sire, Surya Baskara, had passed away before he could even see his daughter born. At the age of two, Cahaya often fell ill, to the point that she couldn’t even enter her debut class for 2-year-old horses.
Her racing career didn’t start until she turned 3, and the results were disappointing: defeat after defeat continued to follow her. At the 2010 Pertiwi Cup, she finished 12th. At the Jakarta Derby in June, she only managed to finish 8th. In the Derby qualifying round, Cahaya placed 4th — barely enough to advance to the 2010 Indonesia Derby, though many had begun to doubt her potential.
Two Weeks Before the Derby: Crisis and Doubt
Just two weeks before the Derby, Cahaya faced the greatest trial of her life. She refused to eat for 12 days, consuming only one-eighth of her usual portion. Two days before the race, she began eating again, but only half of her normal amount.
On race day, Cahaya appeared thin and weak. Many began to lose hope, including her owner. Her supporters could only wait for a miracle.
A Miracle at the 2010 Indonesia Derby
When the race began, Cahaya Nagari ran near the back, far behind the other contenders. Throughout most of the race, cheers for her were scarce, yet Cahaya continued to run with all her strength.
With 800–600 meters remaining, she began increasing her speed. Around 400 meters before the finish line, Cahaya overtook her rivals one by one, as if running alongside the spirit of her sire, Surya Baskara, who himself had never won a Derby.
Finally, with a margin of one horse length, Cahaya Nagari crossed the finish line first — an unimaginable victory for a horse that had never won a single race in her entire career.
An Inspiring Legend
Cahaya Nagari’s triumph wasn’t just a trophy. It was a symbol of unwavering spirit, proof that courage and hard work can overcome any limitation. From a horse that was often sick, frequently defeated, and doubted by everyone, she became the only KPI horse to ever win the Indonesia Derby.
For fans and horse racing enthusiasts, Cahaya Nagari is more than a racing legend. She is an inspiration — proof that miracles can come from the most unexpected places, as long as there is the courage to keep running.
