SARGA.CO – Shocking news has emerged from the American horse racing scene. Sovereignty, the top contender widely expected to claim the Horse of the Year title, has been officially withdrawn from the prestigious Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, scheduled for November 1, 2025.
Legendary trainer Bill Mott confirmed the news on Tuesday, October 29, 2025 (local time).
“He was fine 24 hours earlier. But yesterday evening, around seven o’clock, his temperature spiked again, and we had to medicate him. So, the decision was made — we didn’t want to take any chances,” Mott said.
Sovereignty, a three-year-old colt sired by Into Mischief, first developed a fever on October 27. While his condition initially improved after treatment, the fever returned. Mott emphasized that his team would never risk running the horse unless he was in peak condition.
“If we don’t think he’s 100 percent, he won’t race,” Mott stated firmly.
Mott explained that Sovereignty was given fever reducers and later antibiotics as a preventive measure. However, there were no other signs of a serious illness.
“Most likely, it’s a viral infection. His bloodwork looks normal, so we’re not seeing signs of a bacterial infection. But we gave him antibiotics just in case,” he added.
Owned by Godolphin Stable, Sovereignty had been the heavy favorite at 6-5 odds, following a remarkable season that included victories in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes. With his withdrawal, the new favorite position shifts to Fierceness, listed at 5-2 odds.
As for what comes next, Mott said no final decision has been made on whether Sovereignty will return to racing or begin a new career as a stallion.
“For now, he’ll rest. After that, we’ll decide what’s best,” Mott said.
Sovereignty’s absence leaves a major void in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic. Still, Mott’s decision to prioritize the horse’s health over competition has earned widespread praise from fans and industry insiders alike.
