SARGA.CO - Five-time Eclipse Award-winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. produced one of the finest riding performances in Saratoga Race Course history on 25 July, equalling the track's single-day record with six wins from 12 rides.
The achievement ties a record held by Hall of Fame riders John Velazquez and Ramon Dominguez, placing Ortiz alongside two of Saratoga's greatest jockeys.
Ortiz's big afternoon included wins in both graded stakes races. He partnered Counting Stars to victory in the G1 Coaching Club American Oaks before steering Built to success in the G2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes.
He also won aboard Power of Women, Chambersville, Wynstock, and Leave Me, completing six wins on the 12-race programme.
Reflecting on the milestone, Ortiz paid tribute to the riders whose record he matched.
“They're the greatest, they are GOATs. I can't be more happier than what I am right now. I'm so happy for all the opportunities that have been given to me.”
When asked about his own Hall of Fame prospects, Ortiz remained humble.
"That's the goal, make it there. If we make it there that would be great. I try to keep my feet on the ground and keep doing the grind and getting better. I do my best out there every single day and hopefully one day we make it there."
Already a multi-time Eclipse Award winner with triumphs in the Kentucky Derby, Breeders' Cup and numerous G1 races, Ortiz added another star to an already stellar jockey career with his record-tying performance.
