SARGA.CO - American star Journalism has been retired from horse racing after an injury during what turned out to be his last win in the G2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar.

The son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin suffered the injury while loading into the starting gate. According to his connections, Journalism stepped back just as the gates opened, leaving him several lengths behind. 

A New Chapter at Ashford Stud

Journalism will stand at Coolmore America's Ashford Stud in Kentucky for the 2027 breeding season. Though his racing career ended sooner than many had hoped, he leaves as one of his generation’s defining US Classic horses. 

"While this is not the ending we had envisioned, the horse's welfare has always been our priority," his connections said in announcing the decision. "He has given us everything on the racetrack and deserves the opportunity to begin the next chapter of his career."

Despite the setback, he produced a final show of victorious determination. Post-race examinations confirmed an injury, leading owners to retire him rather than risk his long-term future. 

Trainer Michael McCarthy praised the colt’s courage, saying, "What Journalism did at Del Mar was the mark of a true champion. To suffer an injury in the gate, give away that much ground, and still win purely on heart and class tells you everything you need to know about him. He owes us absolutely nothing." 

Bred by Don Alberto Corporation, Journalism was purchased for US$825,000 at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale before joining McCarthy's stable. He quickly established himself as one of America's leading Classic horses. 

After ending his juvenile season with victory in the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity, Journalism emerged as one of the stars of the 2025 Triple Crown trail. He defeated future G1 championBaeza in the Santa Anita Derby before finishing runner-up to eventual Horse of the Year Sovereignty in the Kentucky Derby.

Two weeks later, Journalism captured the Preakness Stakes, displaying his toughness byovercoming a traffic-filled stretch. He completed his run for the Triple Crown by finishingsecond once again to Sovereignty in the Belmont Stakes, becoming the only horse to compete in all three Triple Crown races that season. 

From 14 career starts, Journalism won 7 races, including three G1s: the Santa Anita Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Haskell Stakes. While earning US$4,770,755 in prize money, he finished outside the top three only once: placing fourth in the 2025 Breeders' Cup Classic.
