SARGA.CO – Horse racing has a very long history and has been practiced across many civilizations around the world since ancient times.
According to archaeological records cited by Wikipedia, horse racing took place in Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Babylon, Syria, Arabia, and Egypt. It also played an important role in myths and legends, such as the contest between the horses of the god Odin and the giant Hrungnir in Norse mythology.
This long history has given rise to many racecourses that are centuries old. Some of them have even become global icons of horse racing.
One of the oldest racecourses in the world, officially recognized by Guinness World Records, is Chester Racecourse in England. Still in operation today, it held its first race in the early 16th century, around 1539.
Meanwhile, SARGA.CO highlights three iconic horse racing venues around the world. All three are hundreds of years old and host some of the most renowned races globally.
Home to the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs is one of the most famous names in horse racing. This prestigious race has been held annually since 1875.
Churchill Downs is synonymous with its Twin Spires, an architectural icon that has stood since 1895. Today, the racecourse continues to evolve by embracing cutting-edge technology.
One of its most iconic modern features is The Big Board, the world’s largest 4K video screen, which successfully blends tradition with modern innovation.
Royal Ascot, one of the most famous royal horse racing events in the world, has been held at this venue since 1711. Covering an area of 179 hectares, the racecourse has close ties to the British royal family, as it was founded by Queen Anne.
Ascot Racecourse is renowned not only because members of the British royal family regularly attend Royal Ascot, but also because spectators are expected to adhere to an elegant and formal dress code.
Located in Ascot, Berkshire, Ascot Racecourse serves a dual purpose. It hosts both Thoroughbred flat racing and jump racing, staging 13 of Britain’s 36 annual Flat Group 1 races and three Grade 1 jump races.
In addition to Royal Ascot, the venue also hosts the Gold Cup, one of the most prestigious long-distance races in the world.
Meydan Racecourse has been recognized as one of the most luxurious horse racing venues in the world since its opening in 2010. It is the home of the Dubai World Cup, the richest horse race in the world.
Meydan officially opened on March 27, 2010, replacing the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse that previously occupied the site.
With a capacity of 60,000 spectators, the complex also features a horse racing museum, galleries, a five-star hotel, fine-dining restaurants, and a nine-hole golf course.
Meydan Racecourse includes a left-handed turf track measuring 2,400 meters and a left-handed dirt track measuring 8.75 furlongs (1,750 meters). The venue operates from November to March and hosts major events such as the Winter Racing Challenge, the Dubai International Racing Carnival, and Dubai World Cup Night.
