SARGA.CO – Amid the green expanse of Semarang Regency and the scenic backdrop of Mount Merbabu stands a racetrack that holds historical significance and also symbolizes the glory of Indonesia’s traditional sport: the Tegalwaton Horse Racing Arena.
More than just a racetrack, Tegalwaton has witnessed the long journey of equestrian sports in Indonesia, especially horse racing, which is deeply rooted in local traditions and culture.
Tegalwaton Horse Racing has been known since the pre-independence era, when horseback riding was a form of entertainment and a symbol of prestige for nobles and local elites.
Strategically located in Tengaran District, Semarang Regency, Central Java, Tegalwaton grew rapidly during the 1960s to 1980s, becoming one of Indonesia's largest horse racing hubs.
The venue later became a vital part of the national racing calendar, even included in major circuits such as the National Championship and Indonesia’s Triple Crown.
Tegalwaton is known not only as a race venue but also as a training and breeding center for top-tier racehorses. Many champion horses and skilled jockeys have emerged from this track.
Its cool natural environment and vast space make it ideal for stables and training grounds for horse owners from various regions.
Located in the middle of a village, on Letjen Soemitro Street, Boto, Tegalwaton, Tengaran District, Semarang Regency.
Despite being in a rural area, the Tegalwaton racetrack is spacious and well-maintained, comparable to venues in major cities.
Its facilities are also fully equipped. The arena has spectator stands and vendor booths. There are even small houses dedicated to horse care.
This racetrack meets national standards. The arena spans about 13.5 hectares, with a track length of 1.2 kilometers and a width of 15 meters.
The track surface is made of sand, which helps protect horses from injuries.
When not used for competitions, jockeys often graze their horses at the track in the morning and afternoon.
Locals are welcome to watch the horses for free—fees are only applied during competitions.
