SARGA.CO – In the world of horse racing, it’s not just jockeys or trainers who play key roles. Behind the scenes, a groom named Evan Lempoy from Bendang Stable has an extraordinary story—he once personally assisted in the birth of a racehorse.
In horse racing, grooms are often the unsung heroes—rarely mentioned, but vital to the daily lives of champion horses. From bathing and feeding to ensuring the horses’ health and comfort, it’s all in their hands.
But who would have thought that a groom’s duties could extend to assisting in the foaling of a racehorse?
said Evan Lempoy, recalling his experience with the SARGA.CO team.
According to Evan, a horse’s delivery can usually be anticipated. A pregnant mare will begin to show physical signs as her due date approaches. That’s why the stable team is always on high alert about a week before the expected birth.
“We already know how far along she is and when she’s likely to give birth. So, about a week before, we monitor her closely,” he explained.
The clearest sign, Evan noted, is when the amniotic fluid begins to flow. At that moment, everyone’s full attention shifts to the mare.
“When the water breaks, it means the foal is on its way. All we can do is keep watch,” said Evan.
Although not medically trained, Evan and the trainer remain fully prepared. With experience, instinct, and a deep love for the animals, they ensure the mare is properly positioned, the area is clean, and everything is ready in case of an emergency.
Foaling may not be an everyday occurrence in a stable, but it’s a defining moment that can shape the future of a champion horse.
And for Evan, standing beside a mare in labor is a profound honor—a testament to his genuine love for his work and the animals he cares for.
