SARGA.CO – Ever noticed how racehorses dash down the track looking both powerful and refined, and wondered about the gear they wear?
It turns out, the accessories worn by both horse and jockey are far more than just for show—they play critical roles in ensuring safety and enhancing performance during races.
Shokib Alamsyah of Jatinom Stable shared some insightful details about the standard equipment used in the horse racing world.
The main accessory is the saddle, where the jockey sits during the race. A full set of racing saddles can cost over Rp10 million!
And there’s a good reason for it—it must be lightweight, durable, and designed to help the jockey maintain balance while riding at high speeds.
Equally important is the girth, also known as the amben. This strap wraps around the horse’s belly and secures the saddle in place during training and competition.
The stability of the saddle is vital, as the jockey’s positioning and control depend heavily on it.
Next is the iron stirrup—the footrest that supports the jockey’s feet. More than support, stirrups act as key control tools.
Through precise pressure from the jockey’s legs on the stirrups, signals and momentum can be communicated to drive the horse faster.
For horse owners and stables, investing in quality racing gear is part of the game. The high cost isn’t a barrier when it means greater safety for the jockey and better comfort for the horse during both training and races.
When all eyes were on the race favorites, Mine That Bird came in as the ultimate underdog.
