SARGA.CO – When it comes to horse racing in Indonesia, West Sumatra is almost always mentioned, and among all the regions in the Minangkabau heartland, the city of Payakumbuh holds a special place. Not only does it host prestigious racing events, but Payakumbuh is also a center for breeding and raising top-quality racehorses that are recognized far beyond the region.
According to Faullo Rosie, Daily Chairperson of PORDASI West Sumatra, Payakumbuh remains one of the largest horse racing hubs—not only in West Sumatra but also on a national scale. Many horse enthusiasts from outside the province regularly visit the city to buy top-quality racehorses.
Horses from West Sumatra are known for their quality. Names like Salvator Minang, Romantic Spartan, and Wonder Land are prime examples of racehorses achieving success at the national level.
This great potential didn’t arise by chance. According to 2025 data from PORDASI Payakumbuh City, there are 23 active stables in the area, including the notable Fakhira Stable.
Each stable has a serious training, care, and breeding system, ranging from local to semi-professional levels. At the provincial level, PORDASI West Sumatra’s 2023 data recorded more than 50 stables spread across various districts and cities.
As a premier horse racing hub, Payakumbuh also holds considerable economic potential. Activities such as buying and selling horses, jockey training, feed production, and organizing races create a vibrant ecosystem that generates employment and boosts the local economy.
Moreover, stables and racing events are increasingly being recognized as sports and cultural tourism attractions. The combination of racehorses, Minangkabau traditions, and the spirited Alek Nagari festival makes Payakumbuh a unique destination for tourists seeking authentic experiences.
With a growing number of stables and nationally recognized horses, Payakumbuh is not just a horse racing center—it is a guardian of the Minangkabau horse-riding heritage.
This city is more than a place where horses are trained; it is where tradition and achievement meet with every pounding hoof on the track.
