SARGA.CO — In horse racing, safety is supposed to be one of the top priorities. It’s not just about the jockeys — organizers must also ensure that every safety measure and supporting equipment works properly throughout the race.
One of those essential safety measures is having an ambulance on standby during the event. But a shocking near-tragedy occurred when an ambulance ended up in the path of horses that were actively racing at full speed.
According to The Sun, several jockeys were forced to yank their horses sharply away to avoid a potentially catastrophic head-on collision with the ambulance that was driving down the track.
The horrifying incident happened recently at the Evangeline Downs racetrack in Louisiana, United States.
Moments after the gates opened, eight horses burst out and sprinted at top speed, each jockey pushing to take an early lead. None of them expected that an ambulance would also be moving down the same track — from the opposite direction.
Right after the first turn, the racing horses and the ambulance began heading straight toward each other.
Before the near-collision, two or three horses were running in the innermost lane — the exact lane the ambulance was occupying. Those horses were at the front of the pack, with the rest trailing behind.
Fortunately, two jockeys noticed the ambulance just in time. With trained reflexes, the outermost jockey managed to steer his horse toward the center of the track.
In a split second, the horse swerved away, narrowly avoiding a crash that could have turned into one of the most frightening disasters in modern horse racing.
Thanks to the composure of both horses and jockeys, all eight horses regrouped in the middle of the track and continued the race.
Footage of the terrifying moment quickly went viral on social media, shocking viewers. One user wrote, “Wow. This gets worse every time you watch it. Four or five horses and jockeys dodged a disaster.”
Another commented, confused by the organizers’ decision: “Why did they even start with the ambulance on the track?”
Many viewers said it was the first time they had ever seen something like this. “This is probably one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen at a racetrack — an ambulance racing on the rail. Insane,” another person commented.
Following the incident, the organizers canceled the race and admitted that the ambulance had been positioned incorrectly on the track.
Legendary jockey John Velasquez also reacted after watching the footage, calling the incident “unbelievable.”
“Thank God the horses and jockeys are safe,” he wrote.
