SARGA.CO – A heartwarming scene unfolded at a horse racing track in Subotica, Serbia. An NBA professional and one of the brightest stars in America’s top basketball league was seen covering his face, overwhelmed with emotion, as his cherished horse crossed the finish line in first place.
That NBA star was none other than Nikola Jokić. The Serbian native is renowned as a key player for the Denver Nuggets.
Fierce on the basketball court, Jokić could only cover his face with both hands as he watched the horse he had cared for since birth outrun two competitors to win the race.
Cameras captured the tearful moment as Jokić watched from the sidelines before finally making his way to embrace both the winning horse and its jockey.
Pure joy washed over Jokić that day. After regaining his composure, he lifted the jockey from the sulky and doused him with a bottle of champagne—then did the same to the rest of the winning team, finishing the celebration by pouring champagne over himself.
The moment reminded many fans of Jokić’s understated reaction after winning the 2023 NBA Finals. At the time, he famously said, “Job’s finished. We can go home now.”
In a press conference following the horse race, Jokić once again emphasized his longing for home, saying he had to attend a horse racing championship on Sunday, followed by a victory parade on Thursday, which would mark the end of the season.
Jokić’s love for horses is well-known. He fell in love with them at the age of 12 when his family took him to a race in his hometown. He even received his 2022 MVP trophy in Serbia while at his horse stable.
During the 2023 off-season, Jokić and teammate Aaron Gordon attended a horse race together in Serbia. American jockey Tim Tetrick—who has previously worked with Jokić—once said that horse racing is his true passion, and predicted that Jokić would become a horse trainer after retirement.
Jokić has just wrapped up a phenomenal season, averaging 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists.
Market value expected to reach US$1.73 billion by 2035
