SARGA.CO – Located in Legok Jawa Village, Cimerak District, Pangandaran Regency, the Legok Jawa Horse Racing Arena is one of only two horse racing tracks in the world situated right by the beach—the other being in England. This venue has been known since the 1980s, evolving from a local tradition into a professionally recognized racing event.
From Local Grounds to PON Venue
Initially established as a public recreational space, Legok Jawa gained national prominence when it was selected as a venue for equestrian and skydiving events during the 19th West Java National Sports Week (PON) in 2016, reinforcing its status as a national-level circuit.
Though dubbed “the second-best in the world,” this refers more to its unique seaside location than to its technical quality. Following PON, the venue experienced a decline in condition, often becoming rundown and poorly maintained when no major events were held.
One of Legok Jawa’s most iconic legends centers around the Pandan Uwong tree, a pandan tree that stands firmly in the middle of the racetrack. Locals believe that since the arena's inception in the 1980s, the tree has never been successfully cut down—heavy machinery used to remove it would reportedly malfunction. The tree has become a respected local symbol.
Pangandaran Cup 2025: A Revived Spirit
After years of neglect, Legok Jawa came alive again as the host of the Pangandaran Cup 2025 on June 1. The event attracted horse racing enthusiasts from across the country. In addition to races, it featured horseback archery as an exciting alternative attraction.
With the backdrop of the Indian Ocean and the coastal breeze, the event offered a viewing experience that was nearly unmatched.
Tourism Potential & Community Engagement
Legok Jawa is more than just a sports arena—it also serves as a social space and tourist destination. During the holy month of Ramadan, Cimerak residents often gather here for ngabuburit (waiting for iftar), enjoying the view while watching horses train.
According to local studies and cultural activists, this arena blends sports, culture, and nature, offering thematic tourism potential rooted in local wisdom that deserves further development.
