SARGA.CO - Big Red Farm, home to some of Japan’s most famous retired racehorses including fan favourite Gold Ship, has introduced new visitor restrictions after a surge in fans began affecting daily operations at the breeding farm.
Effective 11 July this year, the Hokkaido farm has suspended public visits on weekends and public holidays indefinitely. Weekday visits will continue as normal, but the farm warned that additional restrictions could be introduced if crowd levels become too difficult to manage.
On its official website, Big Red Farm explained that it is unable to provide the staffing, visitor guidance and parking capacity needed to safely accommodate the growing number of guests.
The decision reflects the sheer popularity of Gold Ship, the six-time G1 winner whose eccentric personality has earned him a devoted following both within horse racing and Uma Musume: Pretty Derby fans.
In recent years, he has become one of the most sought-after retired stallions for racing fans visiting Hokkaido.

The farm also added that further closures may be implemented whenever staff believe visitor numbers could interfere with the farm's normal operations or compromise safety.
Big Red Farm also apologised to supporters who had already planned trips to see Gold Ship and the other resident stallions.
"We sincerely apologise to everyone who had already planned to visit and regret any inconvenience or disappointment this may cause," the statement read. "This decision has been made to prioritise the safety of our visitors and the smooth operation of the farm. We kindly ask for your understanding and cooperation," Big Red Farm official Instagram account said.
Although weekend pilgrimages to see the beloved Japanese racehorses are on hold, fans can still visit Big Red Farm on weekdays, when public access remains unchanged.
The announcement serves as a reminder that despite welcoming visitors for many years, the facility's primary role remains that of "a working breeding farm, not a tourist attraction.
