The Legacy of Priam, the First Racehorse to Conquer the Indonesia Derby

Baharna TV

SARGA.CO – Long before racecourses were packed with thousands of spectators, before cameras and livestreams captured every stride of top racehorses, Indonesian horse racing history was once defined by one name that has now become a legend: Priam.

He was the first racehorse to win the Indonesia Derby, the most prestigious championship in the country, officially launched by PORDASI in 1974. For senior racing figures, Priam is remembered not just as a winner, but as a symbol of the sport’s early rise.

Priam was a dark chestnut (near-black) G1 stallion representing North Sulawesi. He was the product of a cross between the stallion Keen Court and the mare Bonita — a pairing considered exceptional by breeders at the time.

His strength, stamina, and competitive nature were evident from a young age. It’s no surprise that ACJ Mantiri, his owner and breeder, had complete confidence preparing Priam for the inaugural Derby.

Back when training facilities were far from luxurious, Priam was conditioned by trainer Kabori. In the saddle, he was entrusted to a talented young jockey, Maxi Singal.

The First Derby: Only Six Horses, but Truly Historic

The 1974 Indonesia Derby was held in Manado, likely at the legendary Ranomuut Racecourse — an arena that no longer exists today.

Horse racing wasn’t as popular then. Only six horses competed. But numbers didn’t matter; the Derby’s prestige remained high because it was Indonesia’s first official national-level race.

And it was on that track that Priam proved his class. With steady speed and a sharp acceleration, he pulled ahead of his rivals and became the very first horse to claim the Indonesia Derby trophy.

Today, the Ranomuut Racecourse is gone. The place may have disappeared, but Priam’s story lives on among Indonesia’s racing enthusiasts.

The Indonesia Derby has produced many great champions since Priam — from Cempaka in 1976 to modern icons like Manik Trisula, Djohar Manik, and King Argentin. But there can only ever be one first. And that name is Priam.
