SARGA.CO - The Japanese bloodstock market opened its six-day 2026 Summer Sale on 17 August in emphatic fashion, as an Efforia colt became the first session’s top seller after attracting a final bid of ¥54 million.

Held at the Hokkaido Sales Complex in Shinhidaka, the Summer Sale is one of Japan’s major yearling sales. The opening session saw 224 yearlings go through the ring, with 168 ultimately sold for an aggregate ¥1.267 billion, excluding tax. The clearance rate reached 75%, while the average price was approximately ¥7.542 million. 

The star of the first day was a 2025-born colt by Efforia, Japan’s 2021 Horse of the Year, out of the mare Tradition. Bred by Nakano Farm in Hidaka, he immediately attracted eyes because of his pedigree as a half-brother to Unseal, last autumn's Shangrila Stakes winner. 

After several parties competed for the colt in the sales ring, the bidding eventually stopped at ¥54 million, with Osaka-based Ichimonkai Co., Ltd. securing the youngster.

For Efforia, whose racing career included wins in the Satsuki Sho, Tenno Sho (Autumn) and Arima Kinen, the sale represents another key step in the next chapter of his legacy. The colt will now carry the expectations of being one of his most valuable yearlings.

The Summer Sale is particularly important for Japan's regional breeding operations, giving buyers access to a broad selection of young Thoroughbreds from farms throughout Hokkaido.

With five more days of selling still to come, the opening session has already established a strong benchmark, since more than three-quarters of the horses on offer found buyers, and total turnover surpassed ¥1.2 billion despite being the first of a six-day auction. The average price also remained above ¥7.5 million.

The 2026 Summer Sale continues through 22 August, with hundreds more yearlings to go through. For buyers, the challenge now is identifying the next generation of Japanese racing stars before they ever reach the track. Some will become valuable broodmares or stallions, while others may develop into internationally capable horses.

The first headline of this year's sale, however, belongs to the Efforia colt. ¥54 million, a proven family and a champion sire backing him up: Japan's bloodstock season already has a horse to watch.
