SARGA.CO—In the high-risk and adrenaline-fueled world of horse racing, Jemmy Runtu is a well-known and talented jockey from King Halim Stable. However, behind his rising fame is an unwavering figure who has supported him with boundless sincerity—his wife, Ayu Nastiti.
In an exclusive interview with SARGA.CO, Ayu shared her journey of love, struggles, and resilience as the wife of a professional jockey.
Ayu and Jemmy first met in Pacitan, East Java, during a youth service at a church. There, Jemmy asked for Ayu’s BlackBerry PIN—a simple moment that marked the beginning of their love story.
Although Jemmy initially seemed indifferent, their relationship gradually grew through long conversations online until they felt an undeniable connection. Without hesitation, they decided to get married in less than six months.
“Maybe it was fate. Everything just seemed to fall into place,” Ayu said gratefully. Their marriage has lasted for 11 years, and they have been blessed with three children.
From their relationship, Ayu knew that Jemmy was a professional jockey. However, this didn’t immediately worry her.
Her fears surfaced over time, especially as she realized the immense risks jockeys face on the track. “I once questioned, ‘Why is my husband a jockey?’ Plus, he’s from Manado, while I’m from Java, so my family also had many considerations,” she admitted.
However, as time passed, Ayu learned to embrace and support her husband wholeheartedly. To this day, she always reminds Jemmy before every race with a short yet meaningful message: “Stay focused, honey. Be careful and trust in God.”
One of the most traumatic experiences for Ayu was seeing Jemmy fall repeatedly at the same turn at Tegalwaton Racetrack in Semarang Regency. “I even told him, ‘Should you just quit being a jockey? I’m scared, I’m traumatized,’” she recalled.
But Jemmy always reassured her with his optimism. “I’m fine, don’t worry,” he would say. Even after suffering multiple injuries and fractures that required surgery, Jemmy remained determined to return to the racetrack.
During his recovery, Ayu became his most significant support system. She was also deeply grateful for the full support Jemmy received from the King Halim Stable team.
He was provided the best medical treatment directly by the stable owner, Mr. Kusnadi Halim, who ensured that Jemmy’s recovery went smoothly. “It only took three months of treatment, and he was already back on the track,” Ayu said.
Being a jockey’s wife is not just about facing fears but also about embracing pride. Their three children greatly admire their father.
Every time they watch a race, they cheer excitedly from the stands, shouting, “Go Papa, go Papa!” Even at school, their youngest daughter proudly tells her friends, “My dad is a jockey! He’s on YouTube!”
Despite often feeling anxious when watching Jemmy race, Ayu has developed coping skills. “I choose to sit quietly and pray, calming myself. I start watching only when Jemmy’s horse is announced as leading,” she said.
Beyond the competitiveness of horse racing, there is a strong sense of sisterhood among the jockeys’ wives. Ayu and other wives of jockeys have their own WhatsApp group chat and even hold regular social gatherings.
“We have our community and a prayer gathering every Friday. We support each other,” she shared. Interestingly, their husbands also have their own WhatsApp group and social events, fostering strong bonds within the horse racing community.
As a wife, Ayu hopes that Jemmy will continue to succeed and inspire other jockeys. She believes she will fully support him if he is capable and passionate.
If her youngest son one day wants to become a jockey like his father, Ayu admits she will give him her full support.
Her message to other jockeys’ wives is simple yet profound, “Be the best support system for your husbands. Never tire of praying and fasting for their safety.”
Ayu Nastiti’s story is not just about being the wife of a jockey but also about love, resilience, and unwavering devotion to supporting her husband’s dreams. Behind every victory on the racetrack is a loving wife whose prayers and encouragement fuel the journey.
