SARGA.CO—Horse racing has given rise to countless monumental historical moments. Prestigious competitions have crowned legendary horses that have shaped the world of horse racing into today's extraordinary sport.
Here are some of the most iconic races that shook the world of horse racing.
The victory of Arcangues in 1993 is one of the greatest and most iconic horse races of all time. This French Thoroughbred was sired by Daniel Wildenstein Sagace, a stallion famous for his win at the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, France's most prestigious horse race.
Despite his exceptional lineage, Arcangues was not considered a remarkable horse and was not favored to win. He had only competed on turf tracks, not dirt tracks.
During the race, his competitor, Californian Bertrando, a crowd favorite, led the pack until the final stretch. Then, Arcangues and his jockey, Jerry Bailey, surged forward with astonishing speed.
In a sensational finish, Arcangues clinched a narrow victory, made even more impressive by the fact that Bailey had never ridden him before the race.
1973 marked an epic era for Secretariat, a stallion whose name resonates with everyone, from horse racing enthusiasts to casual fans.
His legendary story was immortalized in a 2010 film. Secretariat was ranked second on Blood-Horse Magazine's list of the 100 greatest racehorses of the 20th century, just behind Man o’ War.
At just two years old, Secretariat earned the title of Horse of the Year in 1972 and claimed the Triple Crown in 1973.
Known as “Big Red” Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes with a jaw-dropping 31-length lead, completing the track in a record-breaking 2:24 minutes—a record that still stands today.
By winning the Belmont Stakes, Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and the Triple Crown in record time, Secretariat etched his name in history as one of the fastest and most extraordinary racehorses ever.
The rivalry between Affirmed and Alydar is among the most celebrated in horse racing history. These two legendary horses competed against each other ten times, with six of those matches taking place when they were two years old. The pinnacle of their rivalry occurred at the Belmont Stakes in 1978.
That year, Affirmed had already won the first two Triple Crown races and needed one more victory at Belmont to secure the 11th Triple Crown title.
Affirmed and Alydar fought neck and neck in a fiercely contested race the entire way. Affirmed ultimately triumphed by an incredibly narrow margin, finishing in 2:26 minutes—the third-fastest time in horse racing history.
Alydar took second place, becoming the only horse to finish second in all three Triple Crown races in a single season.
The Kentucky Derby is widely recognized as the world’s most famous horse race, and Mine That Bird’s victory in 2009 is one of its most thrilling moments.
The track was slippery from heavy rain the night before, and Mine That Bird struggled to get out of the starting gate, falling far behind the other horses.
He was so far back that he disappeared from the live broadcast for much of the race. Calvin Borel, his jockey, used masterful strategy and skill to guide Mine That Bird from the rear of the pack to the lead.
Commentator Tom Durkin didn’t even notice Mine That Bird until he reached the front, securing one of the greatest comebacks in horse racing history.
Legends that shaped history
These four iconic races are more than just historical events; they symbolize the passion, strategy, and resilience that make horse racing unique. Each moment teaches us about courage, determination, and the powerful bond between horse and jockey.
Horse racing is not just about speed but also about teamwork—between horses, jockeys, owners, trainers, and the enthusiastic fans who bring the sport to life.
When all eyes were on the race favorites, Mine That Bird came in as the ultimate underdog.
