SARGA.CO – The name Sidney All Star echoed loudly ahead of the finals in the 3-Year-Old Derby – 2,000 Meters at the IHR–Indonesia Horse Racing 2025, held at the Sultan Agung Racecourse in Bantul. The proud filly from Djons Stable (North Sulawesi), a cross between Moshe and Arteda Nagari, had delivered a convincing performance during the qualifiers, making her a top favorite on paper.
But in the final race, those high hopes crumbled as Sidney ran out of steam in the last 400 meters—shifting the spotlight to King Argentin, the seasoned stallion who raced with maturity and patience right from the start.
Was It an Overly Aggressive Strategy?
In this Derby, Sidney All Star was set to run with a Front Runner strategy—taking the lead early. The decision aligned with Sidney’s natural traits: nimble and fast, especially on mid-distance tracks like 1,600 meters. However, on a 2,000-meter course, an early assault requires exceptional stamina and flawless coordination between horse and jockey.
Unfortunately, Sidney lacked two crucial elements: endurance in the final stretch and chemistry with her new jockey.
The last-minute change—from Fajar Walangitan to Tripan Eri just two weeks before the Derby—sparked concern. In high-stakes races like this, the bond between jockey and horse takes time and confidence to develop—something not built overnight.
The jockey was also seen frequently glancing back to gauge the distance from competitors, showing a lack of forward focus. The lead taken was too early and too far ahead of the pack.
Meanwhile, King Argentin stayed composed. Using his signature Midpack–Stalker strategy, he began conservatively and gradually picked up pace between the 900–800 meter mark. It wasn’t the first time this method had been used. In 2–3 previous races, King Argentin and his seasoned jockey, Jemmy Runtu, had already proven the effectiveness of this approach.
Just as Sidney began to fade, King Argentin turned on the heat. He was followed by Gavi, Romantic Spartan, and a few others, as the chasing group closed in and overtook Sidney in the final 400 meters.
In the end, Sidney fell out of the leading zone, while King Argentin claimed victory with confidence and control.
Though she failed to fulfill her championship expectations, Sidney All Star still demonstrated tremendous potential—especially after a long recovery from injury. Leading a high-pressure race from the start is no easy feat.
Looking ahead, strategy selection, jockey consistency, and stamina management will be key if Sidney is to rise again.
