This is the story of Pesona Nagari, the pride of North Sulawesi — a horse remembered not only for her speed, but also for the heartbreak that ended her dream of winning Indonesia’s Triple Crown.
Chasing the Dream of Indonesia’s Triple Crown
According to a post from the Facebook page Pacuan Kuda Tompaso Sulawesi Utara, back in 2008 Pesona Nagari was on a mission to claim the elusive Indonesia Triple Crown — a title awarded only to a horse that wins all three major series: Champion 1 (1,200 m), Champion 2 (1,600 m), and the Indonesia Derby/Champion 3 (2,000 m).
Pesona Nagari began her campaign with immense promise. Yet in the very first race (Champion 1 – 1,200 m), that dream ended shockingly. Just 10 meters before the finish line, her jockey fell off — sending the grandstand at Pulomas into chaos. The horse, who had led from the start, lost her victory and with it, her Triple Crown hopes — all within seconds of glory.
Miraculously, Pesona Nagari suffered no major physical injuries, despite the dramatic fall captured in circulating videos. Her jockey, however, appeared devastated — as if watching a dream vanish within arm’s reach.
Undeterred, in April 2008, Pesona Nagari returned for the Pertiwi Cup / Indonesia Oaks, the elite race for fillies. But tragedy struck again — barely 10 meters out of the gate, her jockey fell once more. The horse ran the entire race on her own and astonishingly crossed the finish line first. Had that incident not occurred, Bendang Stable might have achieved a historic Pertiwi Cup hat-trick (2006–2008).
Although there is little visual documentation of the event, the story endures through eyewitnesses and racing records: Pesona Nagari finishing alone — a heartbreaking yet mesmerizing sight.
Redemption: The Triumph at Champion 2 & The Legendary Derby
In May 2008, during the second leg of the Triple Crown (Champion 2 – 1,600 m), Pesona Nagari staged a brilliant performance — winning without a single whip strike. The victory amazed spectators, though once again, few recordings captured the moment.
Then came July 2008, the grand stage of the Indonesia Derby / Champion 3 (2,000 m). Known as a front-runner, Pesona Nagari stunned everyone by adopting a completely new racing style — attacking from behind. Whether due to strategy or sheer dominance, she executed it perfectly.
Starting from gate 12, the outermost position, she patiently overtook one rival after another — and emerged as the Derby champion. It was not just a comeback; it was a historic moment. North Sulawesi became back-to-back Indonesia Derby winner (2007 & 2008) — an unprecedented feat.
Pesona Nagari’s career ended as dramatically as it began. In her final race, a 4-Year-Old A/B class, she once again proved her mettle. Despite a slow start, trailing by more than 30 lengths, she refused to give up — charging from the back to overtake the pack and close her career as a winner.
A story of resilience, heartbreak, and unyielding spirit — Pesona Nagari remains one of Indonesia’s most unforgettable racing legends.
